JAN' N JUNE

JAN' N JUNE, a German clothing brand, aims for complete transparency and an open communication about its production process.

For starters, the label only works with sustainable materials like organic cotton. That’s the green thing to do, because farmers need 93% less pesticides to grow organic cotton than conventional cotton. In addition, Jan ‘n June only uses cotton that is either GOTS or IVN best certified. Another material that’s quite popular with Jan ‘n June (and rightly so) is a somewhat lesser-known fabric called Micro Modal®. It’s made from beech treesand completely CO2-neutral. Micro Modal® is harvested from sustainable forestry, requiring no irrigation.

All of their clothes are manufactured in Poland, by a family-owned business with headquarters close to Bronowski and Holtzheimer, who regularly check in on their sole supplier. And because they limit themselves to just one supplier, complete transparency is perfectly possible.

They have beautiful and minimalistic sustainable clothing, tons of determination, ups and downs and little by little building their baby to make the world a tiny bit better – with some sustainable attitude and for sure with style

MUD JEANS

MUD Jeans is a sustainable and fair trade certified denim brand based in The Netherlands. MUD Jeans satisfies the principles of the circular economy. MUD Jeans are a truly revolutionary denim brand that will change the way you shop for jeans.        The brand puts sustainability first and is built upon a circular economy. MUD recycles old jeans to produce their new jeans helping to reduce waste and protect the environment

Together with their partner Yousstex in Tunisia, they focus on the use of Laser technique and Ozone, which both dramatically reduce the impact on the environment in jeans manufacturing.

LASER

Treatment of the jeans by laser is replacing the conventional use of sandpaper and potassium permanganate.  Sandpaper is used to brush the surface of the fabric and basically ‘open up the yarns’ to make the white base of the yarns visible. This will only become apparent after applying the chemical substance of potassium permanganate.  By the use of laser we basically burn of the surface (and consequently part of the indigo dye stuff) of the yarns. The white, worn effect, will become more apparent after applying Ozone to it. With this process we eliminate though manual labour and the use of harmful substances. Also, the jeans will be stronger because the yarns are less damaged by the manual brushing.

OZONE

Oxygen (O2) is converted to ozone gas (O3), jeans are dampened, exposed to the ozone, and rinsed; the ozone is reconverted to ordinary oxygen before release into the environment. While chemical bleaching or stonewashing uses six to seven washes and rinses, ozone finishing requires two to three.

Ozone finishing reduces energy consumption. Because it reduces the amount of water that must be heated for wet finishing and the temperature required. Furthermore, replacing some traditional finishing with ozone reduces effluent, including the sludge pumice stones create.

Ozone bleaches more quickly than chemicals and stonewashing. Ozone can clean back stains in three seconds. At optimum concentrations, it bleaches denim in 15 minutes to levels commonly desired by fashion today, versus 30 to 45 minutes with traditional methods.

CIRCULAR DESIGN

In the circular economy products are designed to be reused easily.  That’s why they don’t use leather labels, but printed ones instead.

RECYCLE

Worn out jeans are shredded, cut into pieces and blended with virgin cotton This is how a new denim yarn is born.
